Restored Wetland and Pond Serve as Outdoor Classroom

DTS Partner Jerry Schwalbe and Associate Donna Maiello visited with science students and teachers at the Mildred E. Strang Middle School in Yorktown to describe the stormwater and habitat restoration project that had recently been completed just outside the school’s front door. The collaborative effort of DTS’s engineers and landscape architects included basin and stream bank stabilization, removal of invasive plants, pond dredging and shelf creation, and revegetation of wetland, buffer and pond edge areas to reduce erosion and diversify wildlife habitat. Students from various classes received a guided tour of the project, which will also serve as an outdoor classroom and living laboratory.
