Yorktown Middle and High Schools

The Yorktown Middle and High Schools share a 53-acre campus in Yorktown Heights, New York that is traversed by a wetland and pond system fed by on-site and off-site drainage. Due to concentrated flows and failing piping associated with an adjoining collector road, the center of the campus regularly flooded during heavy rains. This resulted in widespread erosion, caused the loss of use of fields and paved areas during and after storm events, and degraded the quality of the interconnected wetland and pond.

As a part of a phased facility improvement project, DTS and its consulting ecologist, William Kenny Associates (WKA), developed an integrated solution to address the engineering, landscape and ecological components of the problematic conditions. The coordinated plans included upgrading the stormwater infrastructure with new pipes, grading, headwalls and stone swales; stabilizing the wetland and pond with coir logs, riprap, a vegetated biogrid and native plants; and creating and augmenting critical pond and wetland buffer areas with meadow grass and native plantings. DTS also developed extensive phasing and erosion and sediment control plans to minimize impacts to the site and ongoing school activities.

DTS and WKA’s sustainable stormwater management plan and improvements eliminated the flooding problem while improving the wetland system’s structure and habitat. The project also created outdoor classroom spaces along the pond edges, which are used by Yorktown teachers for environmental studies of the water cycle, pond organisms and wetland habitats.
